• The watermelon first came to symbolize the Palestinian resistance after the Six-Day War in 1967, when Israel seized control of Gaza & the West Bank. At the time, the oppressive Israeli regime banned the use of the Palestinian flag, and charged it as a criminal offense. Palestinians proceeded to do as they have always beautifully done, and found a creative way to circumvent the ban - watermelons. And just like that, what used to be just a fruit, which carried the same colors as the Palestine flag: red, green, black and white: now became a new symbol of Palestinian resistance
• The key as a symbol of Palestinian resistance began after the Nakbah in 1948, when they were forced to flee their homes. Many Palestinians at this time chose to keep the keys to their home with them, showcasing their determination to return home. The key not only represents the Palestinian’s right of return to reclaim their land, it also serves as a a powerful reminder of the determination for liberation.
• Adjacent to the key, an olive branch gracefully extends, symbolizing peace, hope, and the rich cultural heritage of Palestine. Olive trees hold profound significance in Palestinian culture, representing resilience, survival, and connection to the land amidst adversity.
